They are actually cool. Very breathable material. Thats why the a-rabs wear them to keep the sun off them in the desert.
I use the same one hunting on the central Cali coast...its cooler up here, and works great!
I carry one in my bag at all times. I've worn it on both hot and cold days. Great piece of kit
