I don't think it's pretentious. There is a fundamental difference between a clip and a magazine. It's like calling an apple an orange. When I hear someone call magazines "clips" it gives me the impression that that individual is not educated on subject. But hey, everyone has to start somehwere, and the media doesn't help with the confusion either.
I agree that there is a difference and that they are physically not the same thing. Having said that, it just doesn't bother me when someone refers to a magazine as a clip or calls my rifle a gun. I understand what they are referring to and do not need to point out that they are not using the proper term. Agree to disagree, I suppose.
I correct them on the spot, education is key. Tell someone no automatic has a clip and no rifle has been made with one in 100 years (1908) and see how they react.
Like the guy sitting next to us who called our son (who was obviously a boy) Young Lady? But sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut & ignore the idiot lol even though I wanted to punch him, for whatever reason I was in a really good mood haha
I know a guy who has forgotten more about guns than most people will ever know (many years of military service, life-long hunter, very skilled with multiple weapon systems, gunsmith), and he frequently calls a magazine a clip. It's become slang. He knows full well the difference, and no, I don't correct him.
my decision to correct depends on the person and situation. if i feel i am in a position to educate someone who is open to it i do so, such as when i take a friend to the range or answer questions about guns or my military career. if im in a gun store and hear (which i frequently do) an bunch of total bullcrap, i keep my mouth shut and pretend to be the dumbest one there. that is the quickest way to find out who is an idiot. i dont hang around gunstores run by idiots if i can help it.
It's not pretentious to correct someone. It's about how you correct them. And I don't care the situation, I will correct someone if they call a magazine a clip.
I will admit I did get annoyed when I was reading my book today & the author said that he took the clip out & put in a new clip & it irritated me that she didn't say magazine. Although I know when I first started I called them clips, not knowing the difference though. But now I do & I call them mags.
Oh, and I teach all of my students the difference, and then admit that EVERYONE will know what you're talking about, even if they don't admit it. Just ask them to insert "whatever" in the firearm, and then see if they can hit anything with the weapon. THEN make your determination about the person.
I shoot bullets out of my clip all of the time;) if you correct me 2 things will happen... 1. I ignore you, since I do what ever I want... 2. I punch you in the throat...
I guess I should have said that I would correct them if I know them. I don't know them, I'm not going to say anything. I generally don't talk to people I don't know unless they talk to me first.
you would punch someone for correcting you? when there are guns around? lol I don't take to people either unless they do first or if someone needs help. Like extra eyes or ears or they forgot ammo & I have it I will be nice & share or let them try my firearm. I'm just nice like that :) I see no need for violence lol unless I'm being attacked... lol
Yeah, I'm just not so pretentious to let it get to me.

Here/Hear how many times do you hear them get mixed up? Sorry I couldn't resist.

as long as they know how to load it the right way & put it in & everything, it shouldn't matter too much what they call it. lol
but you're right.. depends on the situation. if i'm teaching someone who is new i will tell them the correct terms. you just have to pick & choose.
yeah i agree i dont think it matters if people use the correct terms..... its not something to get worked up about
It's not pretentious to correct someone. It's about how you correct them. And I don't care the situation, I will correct someone if they call a magazine a clip.
why dose it matter what people call it... give me on good reason why it is so bad for someone to call a magazine a clip?

Never heard anyone call the AK47's mag a "banana magazine"

yeah good call
